Ray Becker, Jr. served as conductor of the Marine Band
of Allentown from January 1, 1962 to April 30, 2006. He was baritone soloist with the band for four years before
becoming conductor.
Mr. Becker graduated from Reading High School in 1948 and earned his BS
in Music and Music Education from West Chester State Teachers College in 1953.
He received his MA in Musi and Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
While in New York at Columbia, he studied with Harry Glanz, principal trumpet with the
NBC Symphony Orchestra which was then under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. From
1954 to 1956 Ray performed with the 192st Army Band at Fort Jackson, South

Ray is retired, having taught for 33 years at both Northampton and Allentown
School Districts. He enjoyed every aspect of his career, which included directing
marching bands, jazz bands, concert bands and orchestras at all levels from elementary
to high school |

Ray has kept busy as a conductor and composer during his retirement. He is also known to play some "serious" golf at Blue Ridge Country Club in Palmerton. He has three career "holes-in-one". |
